REPERTOIRE 2 + PERFORMANCE CD

Repertoire 2

Each Repertoire book contains four Lessons; each piece in each Lesson corresponds to the pieces in the Musicianship book at the same level. This provides two equally effective assignment plans:

  1. When students complete each short, preparation piece in the Musicianship book, they can then study its longer but related piece in the corresponding Repertoire book. This provides students with the most direct appreciation of how studies in musicianship prepare them to perform longer, more challenging pieces.
  2. Students may complete the entire Lesson of short Musicianship preparation pieces, and then study the corresponding Lesson of Repertoire pieces. This gives students the chance to recognize the specific issues they learned in the Musicianship book as they begin learning the corresponding Repertoire piece. This process makes for keen observation and review.

The Glossary in the back of each Repertoire book serves as a convenient and important reference as students build their interpretations of each composition.

The Performance CDs are especially important to students of today for they hear ever less classical music, including music for solo piano and piano four-hands. These recordings provide students with insight into the expressive capacity of the modern piano as well as a way to confirm the accuracy of their preparations of each piece. Listening to the CDs is thus an essential part of their practice plan and a basis for Positive Pedagogy—giving and preparing lessons that do not require any corrections.

Starting with the Repertoire 2 CD each piece is played first in a slower study tempo so that students may confirm the details of their learning, and then in a performance tempo to capture the full drama and expressive phrasing of each piece.

In the front matter to Repertoire 2, the Introduction for students, parents, and teachers includes a two-page discussion of the essential technical skills developed in Artistry at the Piano Level 2:

  • contractions, shifts, and crossings
  • their opposite, extensions
  • as well as contractions and extensions combined.

  • The remaining essays cover Principles of Good Technic and further Principles of Good Study in support of the important advancement students accomplish in this book.

    Taken together, these essays throughout the four levels of Artistry at the Piano Repertoire books provide a concise, informative pedagogy guide for teaching elementary through early advanced students of music. As such, it is our wish that they find their way into every pedagogy class and every music teacher’s association library.
