Dear Mary Gae,
This time of year, we all give thanks and recognize
the blessings in our lives. We are united in giving
our students the rich rewards of music study. Our
profession rewards us in return with the knowledge
that we carry on the treasures from the past and
prepare for those yet to come. We are thus part of
the essential bridge that spans life and Art. We
here at the Artistry Alliance rejoice and give
thanks to each and everyone of you.

Rhythmic Hand Signals
|
|
Explained and demonstrated on the DVD
Many people watching the short DVD
promo asked for information about the hand signals
we are using in all
rhythmic activities. These hand signals are part of
the movement activities used throughout the
Introduction to Music. Movement activities
provide natural, comprehensive learning at the
sensory level. Through them, learning resides in the
body as well the mind. As a result, making music
becomes a natural form of personal expression..
In the DVD itself, you will see these hand signals
demonstrated as well as explained in a graphic
chart. Each pulse of the meter is given a clarifying
movement, producing a different sound through
tapping with the hand, finger tips, or the palm
(heel) of the hand. These movements also remind
students which pulse they are experiencing as well
as developing a free, supple wrist guided by the
forearm and the top arm. This is an example of how,
in the Introduction to Music, we are usually
working on several levels simultaneously. In this
case, the hand signals provide:
- enjoyable involvement in rhythmic activities
- reinforcement of the "personality" of each pulse
in the meter
- development of free and fluid use of the playing
mechanism
- preparation for, and then reinforcement of the
metric stress of each meter
This multi-layered approach is one of the reasons
the Introduction to Music provides such a
solid and confident basis for the students' progress
throughout music study.

Educational Wall Charts
|
|
Coming soon
The Artistry Alliance had its first display booth
recently at the 50th anniversary Conference of the
Utah Music Teachers Association. The display of the
five wall charts used in the DVD drew great
interest. The charts will
soon be available as downloads from our Store Front.
There are:
- three wall charts devoted to pitch
- two wall charts devoted to rhythm, with hand
signals in simple & compound meters
- These charts are useful at all levels of study.
Watch for them after Thanksgiving!

Getting to know what to expect

Collisions of opportunities
Your Artistry Alliance was, quite frankly,
overwhelmed by your large orders of books in
addition to the
DVD offering. Our stock was depleted as were our
mailing supplies. We are not complaining, mind you
-- just explaining why our usual prompt service was
delayed this time around.
Furthermore, several other unexpected, but very
exciting opportunities
coincided with the release of the DVD.
All orders were sent by
November 15. If you have not received your
order in the next few days, please contact us
immediately.
